Flat Tyre on the M50? What to Do (and Who to Call)

A flat tyre on a quiet country road is a hassle. A blowout at 100km/h on the M50 is genuinely dangerous. If it's just happened to you and you're standing on the hard shoulder reading this, here's what matters most — keep yourself safe first, then sort the tyre.

1. Get the car off the road safely

If the tyre has blown while you're driving, do not slam the brakes. Grip the wheel firmly, ease off the accelerator, and let the car slow down naturally. Indicate left and move onto the hard shoulder as far over as you can — ideally just past an emergency phone or marker post so you can describe your location.

2. Hazard lights on, everyone out

Switch on your hazard warning lights immediately. Get every passenger out of the car on the passenger side (left side) and move them well behind the safety barrier. Never stand between your car and the live lane of traffic, and never try to change a tyre on the hard shoulder of a motorway — it's not safe.

3. Note your exact location

Look for the nearest blue marker post. Each post has a number on it (for example 'M50 N 23.4') which tells emergency services exactly where you are. If you can't see one, use Google Maps on your phone to share your live location.

4. Call for mobile tyre replacement

Driving on a blown tyre will destroy the wheel and can cause you to lose control. Calling a tow truck means waiting hours and paying for both the tow and the tyre fitting. Can the tyre be repaired?

After a high-speed motorway blowout, the answer is almost always no. The sidewall is usually destroyed and the inside of the tyre is damaged in ways that can't be safely repaired. We'll bring a replacement and inspect the old one in front of you before fitting.
